Stacey Barr from Love Paper Co
Meet Stacey from Love Paper Co, a gorgeous wedding stationery company. I have worked with Stacey for a while now, I do some photography for her (although she is so good herself I am not 100% sure why she needs me!). Stacey is such a beautiful soul and without fail she is always there with a supportive word or two if needed. She creates the most beautiful products in the whole world.
How did you get started?
I have been a graphic designer since graduating from art school and my biggest love in the whole design process was choosing the perfect paper - my desk at work was always piled high with various samples. After doing a few friends invites along with our own and heading off on maternity leave to have our first daughter I decided on a whim to apply to sell on Not On The High Street and the rest is history!
What is your favourite thing about running a business?
I love that I am able to spend more time with our girls than I would if I worked a 9-5. I choose my own hours and I can be really picky about the jobs I take on too!
Who is your inspiration?
My inspiration is my two little girls - Emmy and Ayla. I want them to see that I work hard but also that hard work pays off - its given me the opportunity to be at home with them while having a job that I truly love. They gave me the confidence to go it alone as I never thought I would be running my own business.
What is, in your opinion, the most important thing to remember when running a business?
I think the most important thing is to be organised, without that you are going to struggle to keep on top if things. I use an online system called trello to keep track but I also still rely on good old pen and paper and make lots of lists too!
What do you consider your biggest business achievement?
My biggest achievement for the business so far was exhibiting at Aberdeens biggest wedding exhibition in January. I’d put it off previously as the whole thing seemed so daunting but I’m so glad I did it - the whole weekend was hard work but it’s paid off and I received so many orders as well as making more industry contacts too.
Tell us a fact about your business: (this can be how much sellotape you go through, or a funny fact people wouldn’t know - anything!)
Not really about my business as such but I chose the paper for our wedding invitations before I even chose my dress!
What is your favourite product / service you offer?
My favourite service is my bespoke wedding design service - I love creating a new wedding suite from scratch, it gives me a chance to play with papers and finishes and its great to create something that is unique to that couple and see it all come together. You can find full details about this here.
What is your number 1 advice for someone thinking of starting a business?
Expect to work hard! It's not an easy option to decide to go self employed, its takes a lot of hard work and you really need to know the industry you are in. Research and keep learning. I’m working hard on new skills this year as I want to keep growing the business and offer services that are different to other suppliers too.
